Students who meet the Bright Lights standards and are recommended by their teachers and six staff members are inducted into the Bright Lights program.
Induction ceremonies are conducted throughout the school year at assembly programs. A significant number of adult supporters (typically 40-60 parents and family friends) attend these programs to honor the children, as they become Bright Lights.
Through themed meetings held throughout the year, BLI focuses on topics including:
Voter registration and voter education
Advocacy for prostate and breast cancer screenings
Bright lights gain a sense of belonging and citizenship by selecting a cultural ancestor who serves as a role model. Students are required to share with others about the contributions of their cultural ancestor.
