Some of our activities that foster literacy include:

The Reader

Writing workshops, conducted by Marilyn Day and Joanne Markman, provide instruction on writing books from start-to-finish and enable students to ultimately publish their own books.

Parent workshops to engage parents in their child's development as an avid reader.

Guest speaker series in which local politicians, businesspeople, college students and artists read books to a classroom of students. Students then interview the guest speaker about their experiences, education and careers.

Activities to complement The 100 Book Challenge®. BLI assists in both infusing schools with appropriate collections of culturally relevant and appropriate books and in challenging students in Grades K-2 to read 100 books a marking period and students in Grades 3-5 to read 100 units of 15 minutes or 25 hours a marketing period.

Elder Bright Lights (in fourth and fifth grades) mentor younger students in reading.
