Some of our activities that foster literacy include:

Marilyn Day Writer’s Workshops are conducted by Joanne Markman & Barbara Holmes.  They provide instruction on writing books from start-to-finish and enable students to ultimately publish their own books.

Parent workshops are given to engage parents in their child's development as an avid reader.

Guest speaker series are scheduled in which local politicians, businesspeople, college students and artists read books to a classroom of students. Students then interview the guest speaker about their experiences, education and careers.

The Ture Reader was given to the Bright Lights by Kwame Ture

First Book is a new partner with the Bright Lights.  First Book is dedicated to providing children with their own books to start their own library collections.  They provide new books for each Bright Light when they are inducted in the New Bright Light Society of Learners and when they reached milestones in The 100 Book Challenge®.

The 100 Book Challenge® program is supported by BLI. BLI assists in both infusing schools with appropriate collections of culturally relevant and appropriate books and in challenging students in Grades K-2 to read 100 books a marking period and students in Grades 3-5 to read 100 units of 15 minutes or 25 hours a marketing period.  Elder Bright Lights (in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades) mentor younger students in reading.

The Gladwyne Public Library provides the Bright Light Initiative with hundreds of books yearly.  Barbara Murray and Emerson Kolesnikoff inventory the books and color code them based on The 100 Book Challenge® database.  These books augment The 100 Book Challenge® collection and supplement the children’s personal libraries.
